The Mech Who Loved Me London Steampunk The Blue Blood Conspiracy Book 2 eBook Bec McMaster

Things are always exploding in her Steampunk London universe, and I love it! The action in this novel is stellar, and the suspense is aided by tying together what are arguably the two weakest links in the Company of Rogues. And I am speaking of Kincaid and Ava, who are the heart behind the COR.

Liam Kincaid is a mech, with a massive artificial fist to go with the massive chip on his shoulder regarding Blue Bloods. He isn't the smartest guy on the team, or the fastest, and due to his human status, he might be one of the most vulnerable. However, he does have an equally massive heart that beats beneath the rough and gruff exterior. In my mind's eye, I see a bigger, taller Russell Crowe, a la Gladiator, rather than the urbane skinny boy on the cover.

Ava McLaren is smart and brave and slowly overcoming the horror of her torture at the hands of a crazy scientist. Her brain is continually sidetracked by the man she can hardly believe she has an itch for - her temporary bodyguard in fieldwork, Kincaid. I loved that she is so smart and intuitive with the science part of this steampunk world. I also greatly enjoyed how protective the Company of Rogues were of the brainy yet delicate woman in their midst. She is their heart, and McMaster does an excellent job of staging Ava's sense of hope and how important it is to the team. Unlike many romance authors, McMaster never has her women hating on one another, and the ladies in the recently formed COR are a special blend of new friends and support, and this aspect really develops in the second novel in this series. There are still moments where the ladies are getting to know one another, but you can tell they are going to be forever-sisters.

The action and romance are exciting, and given the personalities of Ava and Kincaid, I thought the love story progressed in an amusing yet expected way. Tie in poison and bombs and cutting-edge mech suits and it is a glut of exhilarating exploits. I couldn't get to the next book fast enough.

The Mech Who Loved Me London Steampunk The Blue Blood Conspiracy Book 2 eBook Bec McMaster Reviews

I've been a huge fan of Bed McMaster since I first read her first London Steampunk series. The world she has created is vivid, colorful, and full of fun characters and the p!ots and romance make it hard to put the books down. The continuation of that world with The Blue Blood Conspiracy series got me very excited and a book featuring Ava - even better. Overall, I felt McMaster did another great job. I like that Ava & Kincaid get paired up and that it's not overly cliche-y 'opposites attract' (even if the two are night and day). I also liked the overarching theme of accepting yourself despite your differences and weaknesses. The only reason I have it 4 stars (& really I would have given it a 4.5 if it was an option), was the over the top angst of their relationship. A little angst is fine, but it just went on for too long. However, once they got around to it, so deliciously naughty (warning - McMaster has no problem with graphic sex scenes, so if that is not your thing she's probably not the author for you). Overall, I enjoyed this book and love how the big picture is piecing together. Cannot wait to see what is in store for Gemma and Obsidian.
I am huge fan of the McMaster universes and have read all of her previously published works. I awaited the release of this installment in the blueblood conspiracy series with much anticipation. However, I admit that I am finding this novel to be the weakest so far of all of those that I have read. While the chemistry between Kincaid and Ava is lovely to watch, and I love how the author created such a masculine but also supportive character who can accept and even champion Ava's independence, the overall story line is too angsty- too much telling and inner dialogue and oddly out of place heartfelt speeches. Even the wonderful acceptance of differently abled individuals which has been a hallmark of this series seemed more forced, more exploited through Kincaid's constant self-absorbed brooding. Even the mystery was delivered and exposed via dialogue, lacking the action and anticipation of previous books. After a while it felt a bit like teenage melodrama, except for the love scenes.

And, on that note, another thing that is becoming a peeve of mine relates to not the explicitness of the love scenes (that I have no problem with), but the 'back door' activity is just not my thing, particularly the way it was carried out in the tub scene. Rather than finding the scene enthralling or exciting, it just seemed awkward and a little gross. To be fair, I realize not everyone has the same preferences where this kind of sex is concerned, and I totally get that some folks might have found this scene more interesting than I did. But, I do think that this is becoming a bit of a cliche -- a trite way of making love scenes more risque, and it makes me look forward less to the next installment in this series.
