Afterglow Karsten Knight Books
About half of the book deals in detail with the return of John De Wolfe from the Holy Land with King Richard. The story of the return and how King Richard was captured is told in much detail. The portrait of the King is NOT a flattering one, There is considerable information about the tribulations of the return and how hard it was to get around Europe and avoid capture. There are some iteresting details about sailing along the coast of Italy trying to find a safe place to land. The facts were quite exciting. And of course, as always Sir John is accompanied by Gwyn. You will be amazed at the hardships people of that period endured while travelling or staying at local inns. Knowing that Dr. Knight does extensive research for his books, I have no doubt of the authenticity of his descriptions of inns, sleeping accomodations and food.Once Sir John reaches Exeter we meet all the main characters in the later mysteries -- his wife Matilda, Thomas De Payne, Sir Richard de Revelle, the men of Castle Rougemont and the delectable Nesta. The book fills in the back story of how Nesta became his mistress, how he met Thomas and how he became Crowner. There is an interested description of his buying and remodelling his house in town. There are three minor nurders to solve but they are not crimes explored in depth as in the later series, but they help fill in the last part of the book.
If you don't know the series this is a good book to start with - but be warned - it is not nearly as exciting as the series, so try the series even if you did not like this book. In a sense this book is more for afficionados of the series as it answers questions left unexplained in the series. I am glad I have it as I have the whole series. But I doubt I will reread it.
First let me say that I have the audio book also ao I will mention a few words about that. The audio book is NOT read by Paul Matthews who has done all the rest but rather by Colin Mace who is not quite as good as Paul Matthews.

Afterglow Karsten Knight Books Reviews
I have just finished this pre-quel to the Crowner John series. I have definitely enjoyed it as it tied together a few loose ends. The entire series is worth reading.
As always a good read. Also another look into the history of this time. Well rounded characters make this a satisfying read.
Great ending to the series and I can't wait for the next installment of the new triology to come out.
This book prefaces the series very nicely and sets the background for the major characters. Although the mystery doesn't begin until well into the book, it's well-plotted and compelling. My one complaint is the price ........ you can buy a soft cover for the amount that's being charged.
When I read the first book in this series (Wildefire) I was impressed with the amount of research and creativity this author put into his work, and those thoughts stayed true to the end. But unfortunately I couldn't get passed the complete lack of any real character development.
There are SO MANY characters that are introduced over the course of this series. And most only last a few pages, or maybe a chapter. I've often said that sometimes YA books seem to steer clear of 'death' or 'tragedy' because it's for a 'younger audience' and that isn't the case here...but because all these characters just show up and then leave, there's no attachment to them and therefore their absence isn't really a factor for the reader.
Even the 'main' characters aren't the well developed, with the exception of Ash and to a lesser degree Eve (but only at the very end).
Despite my overall dislike of this series, it's obvious that the author is very creative. The epilogue is one of the best things I've read in a long time. It worked so perfectly and resolved by feelings of 'how is he going to counter this' in just a few pages.
But that shining moment wasn't enough to save the series. This is one I won't read again.
This is another well written, historically accurate book by this wonderful author. It's great to have an explanation for some of the stuff and personalities that appear in the main series of books, but some of the back story seems a bit forced- the story doesn't flow as well as the main series of books.
This book concludes the Wildefire trilogy with a happy-ish ending. Ashline has to find a way to defeat Colt's evil plans which isn't easy since he is a god who is almost invincible. He heals almost immediately from any injury and he has had many lifetimes to come up with his evil plans.
Ashline watches friend die and still struggles to save those she loves. She fights for the life she wants to live rather than the live the life Colt has planned for her. She gather allies including her estranged sister Eve. The final battle requires a major sacrifice.
I really liked the solution Ash comes up with to protect the next reincarnations of the gods. I thought it was quite creative. This was an enjoyable trilogy. I liked that the kids were current incarnations of gods from a wide variety of mythologies.
Fans of fantasy with a modern setting will enjoy this trilogy.
