The Matchock Gun is a short story that distills in a few pages what life was like in the Hudson Valley during decades of war between the settlers of that valley and the French Canadians and their Indian allies to the north. It was written by an authority on the region and its history, the same author who wrote Guns Along the Mohawk, which was made into a movie. Any short story written for children has its limitations, but the critics of this one seem to focus on its portrayal, or lack of detailed portrayal, of Indians and slaves in this time period. If the Indians are shown as being vicious it is because they are trying to kill a woman and two children, not because they are Indians. The murder of women and children should be shown as evil and clearly called what it is. And this type of attack happened all across this and other frontiers for centuries. Those who criticize this book need to read some of the diaries of the settlers who witnessed and lost family these attacks. As for slaves, they are mentioned only in passing because they were simply part of the world in which these children grew up in. The children in the story do not condone or glorify slavery in the British colonies and neither does the author. Some criticize the age in which this book was written ( the 1940s) as being backward, but it is our own overly sensitive, quick-to -take -offense generation that refuses to look at life as it is, preferring to see only what is pleasant even at the expense of truth.

The Matchlock Gun Walter D Edmonds Paul Lantz 9780698116801 Books Reviews

My daughter and I really enjoyed this book. Glad we found this quick story for our studies of American history.
What wonderful insights were given to past generations of faithful people. It is an amazing true story of courage in a mom and son. Fiction could not have come up with it.
My daughter enjoyed reading a story about a ten year old boy with such courage. She also was impressed by his obedience to his mother.
My 8 yr old needed a Newbery book to do a report on. He's not crazy about reading long boring books (who is?!). This was short and as he was reviewing the summaries, he really wanted to read this one. Once he started it, he found it so interesting he read it all at once! It was gripping, exciting, all things that kept his nose in it until he was done. It also gave us a chance to discuss the history of Native Indians, and the history of early settlers... outside of the classroom.
I'd recommend this book to any young person.
He got an A+ on his report. woo hoo!
I got the book, thinking of my grandson, having come into contact with Edmonds writings.
What I got was a piece of History. It is Dutch oriented and historically fascinating but the best part is that I have a Dutch friend. I passed this little jewel on to her. She can easily read the dialog and sing the lullaby. It will go on to her daughter. It is a bit longer read for me, but the story line is fine.
The Matchlock Gun is about a young boy who must defend his family with an antique matchlock gun during an Indian War. This book is filled with information about the early Dutch colonists of the Empire State and the firm faith they held and took with them to America. It a is totally realistic and moving story and a great read for children.
How times have changed. This book would have 0% chance of being published today, and even if it were, it would probably be banned from school libraries. Yet I know enough from researching my local history that the events described in this book are undoubtedly accurate and entirely plausible. Things such as this truly did happen. Life was hard. Life was dangerous. I'm so glad I discovered this book. I've put it away for my grandkids for when they are school aged.
